Explore the risks of going public with the truth, with panelists Lamees Al Ethari, Carolina Echeverria, Susan Scott, and Emily Urquhart. Moderated by Kim Davids Mandar.

Bios:

Lamees Al Ethari teaches writing at the University of Waterloo. Her memoir Waiting for the Rain, like her poetry chapbook, From the Wounded Banks of the Tigris, introduces readers to Iraqi culture, pre- and post- the U.S. invasion in 2003, and to the rich world of Iraqi women’s stories.

Carolina Echeverria is a Chilean-born artist, activist, and the founder of Native-Immigrant arts collective, based in Montreal. She is writing a memoir rooted in friendship with Indigenous neighbours that explodes convenient myths about Canada, Quebec, and immigration.

Kim Davids Mandar is a Guelph-based writer and educator worker who is focused on intercultural sensitivity. Her next book, (In)Appropriate: Interviews on the Writing of Difference, will be released by Gordon Hill Press, in the fall of 2020.

Susan Scott is an author, educator, and a longtime New Quarterly editor who champions life writing, and voices from the margins. Her latest book, Body & Soul (2019), celebrates Canadian writers and poets upending the ancient art of spiritual memoir.

Emily Urquhart’s Beyond the Pale was a Maclean’s bestseller and a 2015 Globe and Mail Best Book. Her next book, The Age of Creativity: Art, Memory, my Father and Me, appears September 1st. A nonfiction editor with The New Quarterly, Emily teaches creative nonfiction at WLU.
