Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention

Identity theft is the crime of stealing another person’s identifying information for the purposes of getting money or credit in their name. It may involve making purchases on somebody else’s credit card or getting a personal loan. Fraud occurs when an identity thief uses stolen personal and banking information to get money or credit using someone else’s identity. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, in 2014 about 42 000 Canadians reported some form of mass marketing fraud. The CAFC estimates that this fraud costs Canadians about 75 million dollars a year.
