Over the Rainbow - American Musicals and the Search for Utopia

In this special online lecture, film critic Adam Nayman analyzes the history and themes of Hollywood musicals from The Jazz Singer to La La Land, examining the complex relationship between reality, fantasy, and sociology in a genre that has historically been far less escapist than its reputation. Films discussed include Showboat, The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, Cabaret, Dancer in the Dark and The Little Mermaid, as well as selections from key MTV videos like "Billie Jean" and "It's Oh So Quiet."

Adam Nayman is a critic based in Toronto; he writes for The Ringer and Cinema Scope and has written several books on cinema, including The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together. Find Adam on Twitter @brofromanother

Adam's latest book Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks is available this October.
